Protect Our Games Act

What is the Protect Our Games Act?

Assembly Bill (AB) 1921 is legislation introduced by the Stop Killing Games Movement in California. It would provide needed protections and transparency for consumers when video game developers or publishers make the difficult decision to pull support for their products, rendering them inoperable. Specifically, it would require a video game publisher to proactively notify players before ceasing its support of a server connected game, and upon the game’s end of life. Further, this bill would require a video game publisher to provide a playable version of the game or offer a full refund once services cease.

Why This Act Matters

Right now in California, AB 1921, the Protect Our Games Act, is one committee vote away from advancing through the State Senate. The Business, Professions, and Economic Development Committee votes this Monday, June 29. If it passes, publishers will be required to give you 60 days notice before shutting down a game, and either provide a playable version or offer a full refund when servers go dark.

Remember when Concord shut down two weeks after launch? Or when Ubisoft killed The Crew and left players with nothing? AB 1921 is the fix. It already passed the Assembly 43–16 with bipartisan support. Now it needs to get through the Senate, and your State Senator needs to hear from you before Monday, because the vote is on Monday 6/29.
